A few years ago I was digging through my Dad’s old music collection, looking for something new to listen to, and came across a couple of CDs by a band called Five Iron Frenzy. Now, I have to be honest here and admit that the only reason I decided to listen to the songs was because the album art was awesome. (It was a dancing robot, why wouldn’t you listen to the album!?)
From the moment I heard the first song I was entranced. The track ‘My Evil Plan to Save the World’, is on the top of my most played list on iTunes. I listened to the rest of the CD and couldn’t stop looking for more and more. Since then I have listened to every single Five Iron Frenzy song and craved their material, only to discover that the band broke up in 2003. I was gutted to say the least. I have seldom gone more than a couple of weeks without listening to them for a while and their songs make me as happy as they did when I first discovered them.
Not too long ago some interesting announcements began to show up on the bands twitter page. The page promised an exciting announcement to be made on November 22, exactly eight years after the bands final concert. The general consensus on the internet was that the band was getting back together, and true to form, Five Iron Frenzy didn’t disappoint.
On Tuesday, after eight years apart, the band announced a new album and released a new song for the first time eight years. Of course, nothing is perfect and the fact of the matter is, Five Iron Frenzy no longer has a label. This means that the band would have to fund the whole album themselves, something that is obviously completely unfeasible. So they reached out the fans.
They created a page on kickstart.com, with the goal of getting $30 000 dollars for the production of their new album, due to be released in 2013. Reese Roper, the lead singer of the band, posted on the website that he thought that it would take about six weeks for the band to hit their $30 000 target.
They hit $30 000 in 55 minutes, and the donations kept coming. As I’m writing, less than two days after the page went live, the donations are on the brink of $100 000 with 58 days to go. To put this in context, the highest ever donation total for a band on kickstart.com is just over $135 000.
The band have said that they are incredibly grateful and humbled by the reception that they have got and Leanor “Jeff the Gurl” Ortega, one of the bands leading members, has promised to open the band’s PO Box again.
And the song that they released with their announcement? Despite the fact that it was available for free download (before their server crashed from the traffic), it is already their most purchased track on iTunes.
As the chorus of their new song states, “Hope Still Flies.”
